For so long, we have been obsessed with contouring. Thanks to celebs like the Kardashians, brands like Smashbox and SoSu have launched contour kits as well as brands like Benefit and MAC relaunching old bronzing and highlighting favourites with some new bits. But finally, it’s had it’s day and the best part of contouring your face is in the spot light.
Highlighting is the part of contouring that brings your face to life. If you skip out on it, your face looks flat and almost dirty. A shimmery highlight really pulls the whole look together. And now, it’s time to give highlighting the attention it deserves.
When I do my make up, I still use a slight bit of bronzer during the day in the usual spots and a smidge more at night, but no where near as much as I used it. Gone are the days of having cheekbones that could cut someone. On a square brush like MAC’s 191 square foundation brush, brush on your contour in the usual spots; just slightly under your cheekbones, down your temples next to your hairline, across your jaw, down the sides of your nose, and under the tip of your nose.
For highlighting, I go MAD with it. Swipe the highlight the top of your cheekbones then travel up your temples again but closer to the inside of your face, on your cupids bow, on top of your chin, down the top of your nose and slightly up your forehead from your nose in a small triangle.
Daytime Highlight – Benefit’s Watts Up
For a simple day look, I adore using a simple highlighter that gives a glow. For me, I love using Benefit’s Watts Up. It has a slight yellow hue to it, so it’s not great on pale skin but all you need to do is to make sure to blend it well so that it meshes into your skin tone better. When I am tanned, though, I love putting on two layers of it before blending it out a little bit. Love a good sparkly shimmer and Watts Up has that! Pick it up from Arnotts for €35.
Nighttime Highlight – MACs Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle
I have only just been introduced to this by a friend, but it’s already my favourite for a night look. MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle is renowned the world over for how impressive of a highlight it is. I’m a girl who loves sparkle, and this one SPARKLES. In photos, it shows up so well and isn’t too over powering in person. It’s definitely more suitable for nighttime for this reason but also because of how shimmery it is. It reflects a camera’s flash really well but also glimmers in unnatural lighting, like for instance in a club. Snag it from Brown Thomas for €31.
